Blackberries ~ the edible variety. Yesterday was the highlight of my weekend. Together with Mom, Sue and Daisy we drove to Garth and Avril's lushly-appointed estate in Maple Ridge, BC. Their acreage is an oasis for the urban soul.

A couple of years ago Garth and Avril added a large brick patio to the back of their house. We spent the first hour picking blackberries alongside their driveway ~ it was the most civilized berry picking experience I've ever had! Several containers later we joined Avril in the backyard along with good friends Dorothy and Kate. Avril had the patio populated with tables that were laden with colourful food and drink offerings.

The hors d'ouevres consisted of scrumptious bread, homemade humus, taco chips and salsa. The berry red punch was thirst-quenching and delicious. Dinner was served an hour later at Avril's beautifully decorated table. Her raffea-tied napkins each sported a sprig of blackberries. The table cloth was made of fabric purchased during their Prince Edward Island vacation this past spring. Garth barbequed the hamburgers and hotdogs and served them with freshly boiled Tuxedo corn-on-the-cob from Abbotsford. Dessert was an amazing blackberry pie topped with whipped cream.

Each one of Avril's guests left with a jar of homemade blackberry jam and a very full belly. Talk about the hostess-with-the-mostest! Thank you for a lovely afternoon and evening Avril and Garth! It's the kind that memories are made of! (Pictures courtesy of Sue and her mobility phone!)
