Vinyl CafeLast night Al and I went to see Stuart McLean in Mission, BC. Stuart is a gifted writer and a talented storyteller. He is host of the CBC Radio program, Vinyl Cafe. The show is taped in front of a live studio audience. We were that audience last night. (You can hear last night's show on CBC Radio on Sunday, November 12 at 12 noon.)
Stuart read two stories from his latest book - stories about Morley, Dave, and their two children, Stephanie and Sam. They are fictional characters that you can't help but think are real.
Murray McLauchlan was last night's guest star. His energy equalled that of Stuart's as he sang original songs from his recent stage play,'Eddie.' Murray also sang the Farmer's Song - "Straw hats and old dirty hankies. Mopin' a face like a shoe. Thanks for the meal here's a song that is real. From a kid from the city to you..."
The bass player and pianist were amazing -- they played for a solid two hours without a single sheet of music in sight.
I sat in the Heritage Park Theatre in Mission last night feeling proud of my country. Canada has a whole bunch of talent and we're really nice people too.
