#3 Skip It: Theatre Under the Stars

Last summer I bought tickets for my family and I to see Oklahoma! (the exclamation mark isn't mine -- it's part of the 1955 Broadway musical's title). The venue for this "corny-as-Kansas-in-August" production is a Vancouver landmark -- Theatre Under the Stars is in Malkin Bowl at Stanley Park. Locals refer to the outdoor theatre as TUTS. It's been around for a while -- it opened in 1940.
As a result of last summer's damp experience, I offer the following piece of advice: Don't buy tickets in advance. Instead, wait for a warm, dry evening and purchase tickets at the gate. You can guess what happened to us midway through the first half of the production -- the heavens opened and buckets of rain began to fall. We left at intermission. The forecast was for rain, but the tickets had already been purchased and, understandably, the theatre can't give refunds.
Of course, buying tickets the night-of won't guarantee you a seat on a white resin chair, but heck, you can bring your own lawn chairs or a picnic blanket and sit on top of the hill at the back of the property. (I refer to it as "nature's balcony.") Each year the theatre presents two productions. This year's productions are: "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Annie Get Your Gun."
