Mary's Boy Child

An interesting thing happened to me on February 8. My calendar had a meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. -- an MPR Reunion committee meeting to be exact. It was suppose to take place at a friend's home in Coquitlam, which made it logical to join my mom (who also lives in Coquitlam) for dinner beforehand. The meeting was cancelled at the last minute because everyone was either down with the flu or otherwise busy.

So, I stayed at Mom's place and watched the 6 p.m. news. Near the end of the broadcast, the news anchor announced that following a commercial break, there would be a feature story about a once-upon-a-time news cameraman who is now a photographer named "Grant Faint." I couldn't believe my ears. You see, the Faint family and the Grant family go way back -- and the above-mentioned photographer's name is not a coincidence -- he was named after my family. His mom and dad, Mary and Guy Faint, were good friends of my parents before Guy and Mary were even married.

Grant's story is a good one. After a long career in television, he followed his passion and travelled the world taking pictures. He has sold thousands of stock photos to Getty Images and Iconica. Grant's current mission is helping raise money for orphaned kids in Tanzania.

Grant's photos are captivating. He presented some of his work at the Terry Fox Theatre in Port Coquitlam on Saturday night and all proceeds were given to the orphanage. Mom, Al and I attended and we were not disappointed. It was great to reconnect with Grant and his siblings -- and to watch 90 remarkable minutes of breathtaking pictures and excellent film footage.
