Expo '86 déjà-vu

My Christmas pyjamas and I are having a leisurely morning on this final day of 2007.

The view from my bedroom reminds me of Expo 86 -- the Vancouver exposition that looked at past, present and future modes of transportation. As far as I can tell, there's not much difference between modes of travel then and modes of travel now.

A transportation fair unfolds before me: A tug boat pulls a barge laden with sawdust up river; a freight train with mismatched boxcars lurches westward; the distant Alex Fraser Bridge has a steady stream of traffic that looks like an army of ants heading to a winter picnic. Passengers stand in Skytrain cars as they pull into the nearby station. Semi-trailer trucks stream through town with their cargos of consumer goods. A large aircraft banks to the right as it approaches Vancouver International. Sure, it may be the morning of New Year's Eve ... but don't forget ... it's also a Monday morning in New Westminster.
