My sister heard an interview on the radio one day last month where an economist discussed the cost of living in Vancouver. He said a person living in Vancouver needs a job that pays $16 per hour, just to pay rent and buy food. Considering BC's minimum wage is $8 per hour, a person would need to work two full-time minimum wage jobs. Either that, or meet a mate who also has a full-time minimum wage job.
I researched the minimum wage for provinces and territories in Canada. Nunavut has the highest minimum wage in the country at $10 per hour. Imagine what the cost of living must be there.
Here's a chart of Canada's minimum wages as of today.
