Shades of LightMy bedside lamp has beads that dangle from its shade. When it's dark outside and the lamp is on, bead shadows dance on the bedroom walls. It's a pretty sight.
My bedroom also has a large oil painting that hangs on the wall opposite my headboard. It shows an old seaside village somewhere in Greece, or maybe Southern Italy. When I lie in bed, morning or night, I imagine myself in a bed-and-breakfast accommodation somewhere near the Mediterranean.
The magic of the painting is that no matter what time of day it is in New Westminster, the picture also takes on that time of day. The whitewashed houses appear to have more shadows when the light is dim; in the morning when sunlight pushes past the venetian blinds, the picture takes on daylight. It's as though the artist wanted the viewer to experience their picture morning, noon, and night. Works for me.Today is December 31st - the conclusion of 2006. A new year begins tomorrow.
